Special Olympics Missouri surprises Lucas Blattel with a Hall of Fame announcement

CAPE GIRARDEAU – Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) is excited to announce the induction of Lucas Blattel into the SOMO Hall of Fame. Lucas, the son of Wanda and Herbie Blattel, has been a dedicated SOMO athlete for 22 years, starting his journey with Cape Independent.

Known for his commitment both on and off the field, Lucas has competed in nearly every sport offered in Cape Girardeau. He is a true mentor, often helping younger athletes feel welcome and confident by partnering with them in sports and attending their practices.

As an advocate for his teammates, Lucas represents Cape Independent at meetings, including SOMO’s Athlete Input Council, where he shares ideas and improves the athlete experience. His leadership also shines through in his punctuality, preparation, and support for fellow athletes and coaches during practices and competitions.

Lucas is always involved in SOMO events like the Polar Plunge, Tip-A-Cop fundraisers, and other activities, helping raise significant funds for the Southeast Area. He’s also achieved personal athletic success, including representing Missouri at the 2011 World Games in Greece, where he won 2nd place in doubles tennis.

Lucas’s contributions to SOMO over the years have been invaluable, and his induction into the Hall of Fame is a well-deserved honor.

Lucas joins longtime volunteer and supporter Jeanie Byland, who was surprised with the news on October 9.
