Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) made history with its inaugural Evening of Excellence event in the Southwest Area on Thursday, April 4, 2024. The evening was filled with touching moments, inspiring speeches, and remarkable performances that celebrated the achievements and contributions of SOMO athletes.

One of the standout moments of the evening was when Chiefs standout Justin Reid joined SOMO athlete Janel Ronneburg in reciting the Athlete Oath. Their heartfelt rendition underscored the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that defines Special Olympics.

Another highlight of the event was SOMO athlete Allen Cameron’s moving speech. Allen, a beloved figure in the Southwest Area, has been a dedicated SOMO athlete for over 30 years. His speech, filled with gratitude and determination, resonated with attendees as he shared his experiences representing Missouri at the USA Games and World Games. Allen’s story is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the unwavering spirit of Special Olympics athletes.

Adding to the evening’s charm was SOMO athlete Jody Davis’s stirring rendition of the national anthem. Her powerful voice captivated the audience and set the tone for an evening filled with pride and patriotism.

In reflecting on the success of the Evening of Excellence, Brian Neuner, Director of Communications at Special Olympics Missouri, shared his thoughts, stating, “The Evening of Excellence was a truly unforgettable event that showcased the incredible talent and resilience of our SOMO athletes.
