Special Olympics Missouri Hosts First Local Capitol Hill Day

Special Olympics Missouri made history on March 4, 2026, by hosting its first-ever Local Capitol Hill Day at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. The event brought together a passionate group of advocates including athletes, Unified partners, coaches, parents, board members and SOMO staff, all united with one goal: to share the impact of Special Olympics and advocate for continued support for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Throughout the day, the Special Olympics Missouri delegation met with more than 140 state representatives and legislators. These meetings provided an opportunity for athletes and supporters to share personal stories about how Special Olympics Missouri changes lives through sports, leadership opportunities, health programming and inclusive communities.

Athletes played a central role in the day’s conversations, demonstrating firsthand the leadership and confidence they gain through their involvement with Special Olympics. By sharing their experiences, they helped legislators better understand the importance of inclusive programs and the positive impact these opportunities have across Missouri.

The day also gave legislators a chance to meet directly with the individuals and families who benefit from Special Olympics Missouri programs. These conversations highlighted the power of sports to build confidence, foster friendships and create meaningful opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Missouri is grateful to the athletes and advocates who took the time to share their voices and represent their communities at the Capitol. Their leadership continues to drive the Inclusion Revolution, helping build a more inclusive Missouri for people of all abilities.

As the organization looks ahead, this inaugural Capitol Hill Day marks an important step in strengthening relationships with state leaders and ensuring the voices of Special Olympics athletes are heard.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this historic day possible.
