Special Olympics Missouri Announces Exciting Changes to Basketball and Bowling Competitions

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Big changes are coming to Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO), and they’re all about creating more opportunities, more competition, and more excitement for our incredible athletes!
Starting in September 2025, SOMO is rolling out a new and improved competition structure that will ensure more athletes get the chance to compete at the highest level. These updates will bring a bigger, better, and more inclusive experience for everyone involved.
What’s Changing?
- A New Era for Basketball and Bowling! Instead of the State Indoor Games, SOMO will introduce stand-alone State Tournaments:
- A centrally located State Basketball Tournament starting with the 2026 season.
- Two State Bowling Tournaments—one Eastern and one Western—held between mid-December to early January each year.
- A Smoother Path to State! Beginning September 1, 2025, Regional Tournaments will no longer be required, allowing more athletes to advance directly from Area competition to State.
Why is This So Exciting?
- More Athletes Will Compete at State! Every athlete who competes at the Area level will have a clear path to the State Tournament—no more missing out due to limited space.
- A More Balanced Sports Season! Bowling season will now better align with other sports, making it a smoother and more enjoyable experience for athletes and teams.
- New and Exciting Opportunities! With these changes, SOMO can explore fresh, fun events in each of our six Areas, ensuring every athlete has even more chances to shine.
While change can be challenging, SOMO is confident that this new structure will bring greater competition, more inclusivity, and an even stronger sense of community. These updates are designed to help athletes, Unified Partners, coaches, and families thrive—on and off the field.
This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for more details and get ready for a bigger, better, and bolder future with SOMO.
