Here’s a look back at all of the amazing Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) events from September 5-11, 2023!
MoDOT event: Tuesday, September 5
We had a great time at MoDOT Tuesday afternoon spreading the word about Special Olympics Missouri! We love being a part of the MSECC program!
Training for Life Campus Music Class: Tuesday, September 5
During our music class, groups may sing, play instruments or listen to music. They can also discuss the meaning of the lyrics. This class will provide a wide variety of different coping skills, including breathing techniques, rhythmic grounding and relaxation. Check out our calendar to see upcoming music class opportunities!
Training for Life Campus Open Gym: September 5, 6, 7, 8
The Training for Life Campus is still holding Open Gym sessions! We are open from 1-3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays for open play. This is for registered athletes only or pre-approved groups. Shout out to all the athletes who came out this week to have some fun and come visit us next week if you haven’t already!

Young Athletes Training for Life Campus Visit: Wednesday, September 6
Young Athletes from the Special Learning Center visited the Training for Life Campus last Wednesday and had a blast!

Lunch & Learn – KC Metro: Wednesday, September 6
Last Wednesday was another Lunch & Learn! Whether you are a business, organization, or an individual who is interested in knowing more about SOMO, please join us for 30 minutes every first Wednesday of each month from 12-12:30 p.m. You will get an opportunity to meet a KC Metro Athlete and hear their story and meet the KC Metro SOMO staff all while you enjoy your lunch! You’ll even have an opportunity to ask questions. The dates left in 2023 are October 4, November 1 and December 6.
These Lunch & Learns are quick and easy and will take place on Microsoft Teams. To sign up for one of these events, please register at KC Metro Lunch & Learn.
KC Metro Unified Flag Football Intramural League- Wednesday, September 6
A big SOMO shout-out to UMKC for partnering with us to host this unified event! UMKC Unified Flag Football Intramurals will continue to take place on Wednesday evenings until October 4.
Training for Life Campus Workout Class: Thursday, September 7
This exercise class is designed especially for people with disabilities and is structured to make you feel better and have more energy with low-impact stretches. Check out our calendar for more opportunities like this or contact Craig Hall at hall@somo.org.
Chiefs Recycle Team: Thursday, September 7
Check out these pictures from the Chiefs Recycle Team last week! For every Chiefs home game, we have 8-12 volunteers driving through the parking lots during tailgating to hand out recycle bags! Support SOMO by signing up for our next one here.
Creative Session for Picture Me Perfect Art Crawl: Thursday, September 7
Athletes created artwork for the Picture Me Perfect Art Crawl at the Nelson Atkins Museum last Thursday! Sessions included Block and Foam Printing and Ceramics. If you missed last week’s event, there is another opportunity to participate in October! See details here.
Ascension Charity Classic Youth Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 7
Our Special Olympics Missouri athletes participated in the third annual Ascension Charity Classic Youth Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 7 at Norwood Hills Country Club. Our athletes had the chance to learn from a PGA Tour Champions player and an APGA professional. On Friday, a few PGA Tour Champions players – including Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer – shared special messages with our athletes.
Renaissance Festival: September 9-10
SOMO partnered with the KC Renaissance Festival for its 46th festival by working a booth selling and serving food! If you would like to get involved, there are future opportunities all through September and October. Costumes are provided by the festival, and you will be asked to “play the part” by using medieval terms, wearing the costume, etc. Click here to get involved.
SEMO District Fair Parade: Saturday, September 9

9th Annual Super Hero Bocce Tournament: Saturday, September 9
SOMO hosted the 9th annual Super Hero Bocce Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Training for Life Campus. More than 30 teams participated in this Unified event, which raised more than $16,000! STLM Area Bocce Tournament: Sunday, September 10
This St. Louis Area Bocce Tournament took place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hillsboro High School. Great job to all the athletes who participated!
