Here’s a look back at all of the amazing Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) events from October 3-9, 2023!

Smoothie King Polar Plunge Fundraiser: Tuesday, October 3

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Smoothie King in Joplin on Tuesday, October 3rd! 50% of all proceeds made by Smoothie King during this event went to benefit the Joplin Polar Plunge!

Training for Life Campus Weekly Events and Classes: October 3-6

The Training for LifeThe Training for Life Campus has several reoccurring events to look out for! Check out our music classes, open gym and workout classes!

Big River Running Check Presentation: Wednesday, October 4

Thank you to Big River Running Company for their generous donation benefiting our athletes here at SOMO! We appreciate you!

KC Metro Unified Flag Football Intramural League: Wednesday, October 4

Wednesday evening we wrapped up our Unified Flag Football League with UMKC after five weeks of competition! Shout out to UMKC for hosting this event. If you missed out on Flag Football, come join us for the Unified Volleyball League with UMKC starting on 10/17 and there are a few more spots available.

Odessa Local Track Meet: Wednesday, October 4

Odessa put on their annual local track meet on Wednesday morning. Nice job to everyone who participated and thank you to all the volunteers who helped with this event!

Lunch & Learn – KC Metro: Wednesday, October 4

Last Wednesday was another Lunch & Learn! Whether you are a business, organization, or an individual who is interested in knowing more about SOMO, please join us for 30 minutes every first Wednesday of each month from 12-12:30 p.m.  You will get an opportunity to meet a KC Metro Athlete and hear their story and meet the KC Metro SOMO staff all while you enjoy your lunch!  You’ll even have an opportunity to ask questions. The dates left in 2023 are November 1 and December 6.

These Lunch & Learns are quick and easy and will take place on Microsoft Teams. To sign up for one of these events, please register at KC Metro Lunch & Learn.

St. Louis Public Schools Young Athlete Program: Friday, October 6

This Young Athletes Program took place at St. Louis University from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thank you so much to all the volunteers who helped with this exciting event!

Cass County Auxiliary Dinner & Rodeo: Friday, October 6- Saturday, October 7

We had such a blast at the Cass County Auxiliary Dinner & Rodeo last weekend! Friday was a dinner and the rodeo and Saturday was the Cass County parade. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to this event benefiting SOMO athletes!

St. Louis Ambassador of the Year Award: Friday, October 6

On Friday night, Kellen Wolters attended the City of O’Fallon Volunteer Recognition Event, and SOMO was awarded the Ambassador of the Year Award! Congratulations to Kellen Wolters!

6th Annual Scott Wright Memorial Cornhole Classic and Knights of Columbus Check Presentation: Saturday, October 7

The Sixth Annual Scott Wright Memorial Cornhole Classic was held on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Cape Girardeau! There were around one hundred people present at the event to help keep Scott Wright’s memory alive. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation during this event!

Angling for Athletes Benefit Bass Tournament: Saturday, October 7

Another year is in the books for the Angling for Athletes Benefit Bass Tournament. Thank you to everyone who took part or volunteered! Congratulations to Jacob Christenson with a total weight of 16.16 pounds on winning the event and having overall big bass of 4.64! 2nd place went to Michael Welch and Derek Fritz with 14.51 pounds. 3rd place went to Arthur Fortin and Matt Franke 13.94 pounds.
In addition, dozens of anglers took home all sorts of prizes including Kevin Thomas who won a new Garmin Livescope and Gary Roberts who took home the grand prize John Deere zero turn Lawn Mower!
Best of all, thanks to our anglers, volunteers, and business partners we were able to raise over $8000 for SOMO!

Renaissance Festival: October 7-8

Last week was the last weekend of the KC Renaissance Festival! SOMO partnered with the KC Renaissance Festival for its 46th festival by working a booth selling and serving food! We had such a fun time helping with this event and raising funds for SOMO athletes.
