SOMO Sum Ups: March 7-13

Here’s a look back at all of the amazing Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) events from March 7-13, 2023!

Young Athlete Program-Southwest Early Childhood- Tuesday, March 7, Wednesday, March 8 and Thursday, March 9

Special Olympics Young Athletes is an early childhood play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities, ages two to seven. Young Athletes introduces basic sport skills, like running, kicking and throwing. Young Athletes offers families, teachers, caregivers and community members the chance to share the joy of sports with all children.

Unified Intramural Basketball- Tuesday, March 7

A night of Unified Intramural Basketball took place at Missouri State University last Tuesday. Nice job to all the athletes that competed!

STL Metro SSD Basketball Tournament- Wednesday, March 8

This basketball tournament was hosted by Special School District at Parkway West HS. Nice job to all the athletes that competed!

Tipton High School Training For Life Campus Visit- Wednesday, March 8

We had a great time hosting our friends from Tipton High School on Wednesday. It was a great day of arts, crafts and fun at the Training for Life Campus!

STL Metro SSD Track and Field Meet- Friday, March 10

This track and field meet was hosted by Special School District at South Technical High School. Nice job to all the athletes that competed!

10th Annual Shamrock Run- Saturday, March 11

Last Saturday was the 10th annual Shamrock Run in St. Joseph! The Shamrock 5K is a Fun Run/Walk benefiting Special Olympics Missouri North Area. This event took place in St. Joseph, Missouri and was a joint endeavor between local law enforcement and Special Olympics through the Law Enforcement Torch Run® program, which raises awareness and funds for local athletes with intellectual disabilities. Awards were given at Norty’s following the last runner’s finish.

Columbia Polar Plunge- Saturday, March 11

Brave participants took to the freezing water of Missouri one last time this season on Saturday for the Columbia Polar Plunge! This “unbearable” event was the last of 10 Plunges this winter for participants to show their bravery and support local Special Olympics Missouri athletes! The final Polar Plunge of the year will be Joplin Nov. 4, 2023.

In 2022, the Columbia Plunge had 180 plungers and raised more than $78,300! Stay tuned for a press release with the results of Saturday’s Plunge. The Columbia Plunge had music, fun costumes and some low temperatures for our brave plungers!

North Area Young Athletes Program (Maryville, MO)- Monday, March 13

This is a FREE 4-week Program for children with and without intellectual disabilities between the ages of 2-7.  Young Athletes introduces basic sport skills like running, kicking, and throwing.  The Young Athletes Program offers families, teachers, caregivers, and people from the community the chance to share the joy of sports with all children.  For more information about the Young Athletes Program, please visit Young Athletes | Special Olympics Missouri (somo.org).
