SOMO Sum Ups: April 18-24
Here’s a look back at all of the amazing Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) events from April 18-24, 2023!
Central Area Track Meet Waynesville- Tuesday, April 18
Springtime means track season! This central area track meet was hosted by Waynesville High School. Fantastic job to all the athletes that competed!
STL Metro SSD Track and Field Meet- Tuesday, April 18
Special School District at Ritenour High School hosted a Track and Field Meet on Tuesday as well! Great job to all the athletes that came out and competed!
Jefferson County Local Track Meet- Tuesday, April 18
To round off a day full of track and field, Desoto Senior High School hosted this Jefferson County Local Track Meet! Amazing performance by all the athletes that participated.
Young Athlete Program- Wednesday, April 19
Another great week of this re-occurring program! Special Olympics Young Athletes is an early childhood play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities, ages two to seven. Young Athletes introduces basic sport skills, like running, kicking and throwing. Young Athletes offers families, teachers, caregivers and community members the chance to share the joy of sports with all children.

STL Metro SSD Track and Field Meet- Wednesday, April 19
Another great unified track and field meet hosted by Special School District at St. John Vianney High School. Shoutout to all the athletes, SOMO and otherwise, who came out to run and compete on Wednesday!
KC Metro Pickleball Clinic- Wednesday, April 19
SOMO is hosting a FREE 6-Week Pickleball Clinic in collaboration with KC Parks & Rec! The clinic emphasizes foundational skills and takes place Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m., March 22 to April 26.
STL Metro SSD Track and Field Meet- Thursday, April 20
Track, track and more track! Thursday’s track meet was hosted by Special School District at Mehlville High School. Fantastic job to all the athletes that competed!
Chaffee High School Pizza Party- Thursday, April 20
Daniel Fultz and Penny Williams stopped by Chaffee High School with a special surprise for some of our most involved fundraising students! Thank you to Chaffee High School for being the top fundraising school for the Cape Girardeau Polar Plunge this year and we hope you enjoyed the pizza party!
STL Metro SSD Track and Field Meet- Friday, April 21
This track and field meet was hosted by Special School District at Marquette High School. Great job to everyone who competed last Friday!
St. Clair Local Track Meet- Friday, April 21
St. Clair High School hosted this local track meet last Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Great job to all the runners and athletes that competed!
Motor Activity Training Program (Helen Davis)- Friday, April 21
Helen Davis hosted Huskies Champion Day in partnership with SOMO to provide Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) for their students with volunteers from Missouri Western’s Track team and Volleyball team. The Special Olympics Motor Activity Training Program is designed for athletes who are unable to participate in official Special Olympics sport competitions because of their skill and/or functional abilities. The Motor Activity Training Program is designed to prepare athletes—including those with severe or profound intellectual disability and significant physical disabilities—for sport-specific activities appropriate for their ability levels. Central Area Track Meet (Columbia)- Saturday, April 22
Columbia kicked off the weekend with a Central Area Track Meet at Rock Bridge High School. Great job to all the athletes that competed!
Kirksville Area Track and Field Competition- Saturday, April 22
Truman State University hosted this Track and Field Competition on Saturday. Great job to all the Kirkville Area athletes that came out and competed!
KC Metro/ North Area Powerlifting Meet- Saturday, April 22
The Strong Bar Bell Club hosted this “Border Battle” between MO and KS Powerlifters! We had several athletes competing for the very first time! I am so proud to report that SOMO Powerlifters received the highest team average which means SOMO is the winning State in 2023’s Border Battle!! Huge thanks to Strong Bar Bell Club for hosting this incredible event!
Southwest Area Aquatics- Sunday, April 23
This swim meet was hosted at Pat Jones YMCA. Incredible job to all the athletes that participated!
KC Metro XH2O Clinic- Sunday, April 23
High Blue Wellness Center hosted this FREE introductory XH2O Clinic! XH2O is an underwater fitness concept that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities, swimmers and non-swimmers alike! This was a third-party event, and it is not hosted by Special Olympics Missouri.
St. Louis Metro Area Volleyball Tournament- Sunday, April 23
Fontbonne University hosted this volleyball tournament last Sunday. Great job to all the athletes that came out and competed including three teams from Cape Girardeau! Thanks to the Fontbonne University SAAC for hosting us.
