SOMO Hosts Third Annual Unified Champion Schools Unified Basketball Competition
JEFFERSON CITY – Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) hosted the third annual Unified Champion Schools Unified Basketball competition Feb. 8 and Feb. 15 at the Training for Life Campus.
The Unified basketball competitions had a huge impact on local students both on and off the court.
In the arena, we saw students who have significantly improved their basketball skills and relationships with peers because of inclusive practices leading up to the events.
Off the court, students participated in Healthy Athletes to learn more about how to stay in peak health for future competitions.
On Feb. 8, there were 26 free Health Promotion screenings done with athletes from Capital City High School, Camdenton High School and California High School.
On Feb. 15, there were 59 free Health Promotion and Healthy Smiles screenings done with athletes from Jefferson City High School and Eldon High School.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the many volunteers and teachers who put in the time and effort to provide local students with this opportunity,” Unified Champion Schools Senior Manager Emma Thomas said.
Shoutout to our two volunteer referees, Curt Yaeger and Fadraon Anderson. Curt was the 2023 SOMO Volunteer of the Year, and Fadraon is a standout SOMO athlete.
