Recap: 2024 Special Olympics Missouri Athlete Leadership University (ALPs) Weekend

From September 27-29, we hosted the 2024 Special Olympics Missouri Athlete Leadership University (ALPs) weekend, and it was a truly unforgettable experience! With 31 dedicated athletes in attendance, along with a fantastic team of roughly 30 mentors, instructors, and volunteers, the event was filled with learning, laughter, and countless memorable moments.
Capstone Class & Athlete Graduations
Three of our outstanding athletes took the next step in their leadership journey by completing the capstone class. As they prepare for their upcoming graduation from the Athlete Leadership Program, we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and growth. They exemplify the leadership and strength that makes Special Olympics so impactful.
Friday Night: Music, Fun, and Connection
We kicked off the weekend on Friday evening with an incredible musical activity. Thanks to our special musical guests, we enjoyed an evening full of singing, instrument playing, and dancing. The energy in the room was contagious as athletes and volunteers alike let loose and celebrated the power of music to bring people together.
Saturday Highlights: Zumba & Bowling Fun
Saturday afternoon was all about movement and fun! After lunch, we were joined by some amazing dance instructors who led us in a high-energy Zumba session. It was a great way for our athletes to get active while having a blast. The smiles and enthusiasm were unmatched!
The excitement continued into the evening when we headed to Strikers for a night of bowling. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone cheering each other on and sharing in the joy of strikes, spares, and even the occasional gutter ball! Strikers provided the perfect venue for our athletes to unwind and enjoy a friendly competition.
A New Class: Fitness Captains
We were thrilled to introduce a brand-new class this year—Fitness Captains. This class is designed to empower athletes to take charge of their own health and wellness journeys, promoting fitness and encouraging others to stay active. The debut of this class was a huge success, and we’re excited to see how our athletes continue to lead in the fitness space.
A Weekend to Remember
From the laughter shared during musical activities to the sweat worked up during Zumba, and the strikes knocked down at bowling, this ALPs weekend was a perfect blend of fun, learning, and leadership. We are incredibly proud of all our athletes and grateful to our mentors, volunteers, and staff who made this weekend possible. Here’s to another successful event and to the continued growth of our amazing Athlete Leaders!
