Missouri May Soon Recognize Special Olympics Unified Track and Field as Emerging High School Sport

JEFFERSON CITY, MO — In a major stride toward inclusive education and athletic equity, Special Olympics Unified Track and Field has been officially recommended as an emerging sport in Missouri high schools. The recommendation, backed by state athletic directors and superintendents, is now pending final approval from the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Board of Directors.
If approved this June, the move would mark a historic shift in how student-athletes with intellectual disabilities are recognized and supported within school sports programs across the state.
“This recommendation is a powerful message of belonging,” said Larry Linthacum, President and CEO of Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO). “We’re closer than ever to seeing our athletes recognized in high school sports, and we’re excited for what this means moving forward.”
Why Unified Track and Field?
Track and Field has long been a cornerstone of SOMO programming due to its flexibility and accessibility. With events tailored for a wide range of ability levels, Unified Track and Field creates an environment where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities can train and compete side-by-side as equals.
Proposed events include:
- Unified 100m Dash
- Unified 400m Dash
- Unified 4x100m Relay
- Unified Long Jump
- Unified Shot Put
“Track and Field brings out the best in all athletes,” said Luke Lamb, Senior Program Director at SOMO. “It’s the perfect place to start expanding what school sports can be.”
What Happens Next?
The proposal will go before the MSHSAA Board of Directors for a final vote in June 2025. If approved, SOMO will immediately begin working with school districts, coaches, and administrators to implement Unified Track and Field programs ahead of the 2025–26 academic year.
Support resources will include:
- Coach training and certification
- Competition guidelines and event formats
- Program planning and promotional tools
