Special Events Manager

The Special Event Manager is a full-time exempt position responsible for growing revenue to support individuals with intellectual disabilities served in the Kansas City community.  This manager will grow annual revenues by working with staff and volunteers to manage multiple special events in a fast paced fundraising environment. 
 
Duties:
  • Collaborate with volunteer committee members to plan and implement several special events throughout the year, raising revenue and awareness of Special Olympics.
  • Sustain current, renew lapsed and secure new collaborative partnerships within the Kansas City Metro Area, managing benefits to sustain a long term relationship with SOMO.
  • Work with law enforcement to support them as they raise funds and awareness through their annual Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) campaign. 
  • Enthusiastically articulate the case for support, the mission and vision of SOMO to ensure that partnerships align with SOMO organizational marketing and communication efforts.
  • Ensure annual plan objectives and personal performance goals are attained.
 
Ideal Candidate Will Possess: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least two years fundraising experience with proven success in event planning
  • A high level of comfort in reaching out to donors and prospects to develop and maintain relationships that result in funding
  • Excellent personal/written communications skills to clearly and effectively articulate the programmatic, fundraising and strategic objectives of SOMO
  • Presentation and public speaking skills with the ability to network
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with attention to detail 
  • Motivation, initiative and the ability to work independently

Marketing Internship

Brief Description: This intern will work directly with the Development Team of Special Olympics Missouri. The intern will have opportunities to plan and promote special events; contribute to fundraising projects and raising awareness for our new Training for Life Campus and programs. This is a pro bono position based in Jefferson City and the intern will be expected to work at least 20 hours per week. Timeframe: May 28, 2019 – Aug. 15, 2019.

 

Details: Internship length and hours are flexible, depending on the student’s needs. Intern would need a weekly presence in the Jefferson City HQ Office – ideally at least 2 days per week.

 

Specific project dates:

State Summer Games, Springfield, May 31 – June 2, 2019 (no cost to intern)

 

Examples of tasks in priority order include:

  • Implement a fundraising project to raise awareness for the Training for Life Campus as an outreach to the Jefferson City community, called SOMO Spartan Games. Event has been outlined but you will put your own spin on it to involve SOMO athletes. (75% emphasis)
  • Create opportunities thru existing community events to market “Drive it Home Raffle” tickets. (15% emphasis)
  • Develop marketing materials for the Polar Plunge 2020 season to include recruiting partnerships in Columbia, creating marketing materials and resources. Attend Plunge University (no cost to intern) in June in Jefferson City. (10% emphasis)

 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should be creative and enthusiastic, flexible and independent, and be willing to join a team that works very hard to carry out the mission of Special Olympics Missouri. Experience and education in journalism, marketing, or promotions and some special events fundraising experience is preferred.
