Jeanie Byland to Join Daughter Sarah as First Mother-Daughter Duo in Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame
COLUMBIA, MO – Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) is thrilled to announce that Jeanie Byland, a dedicated volunteer for nearly four decades, will be inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame on November 23, 2024. This special honor will make Jeanie and her daughter, Sarah Byland, the first-ever mother-daughter duo in SOMO’s Hall of Fame.
Jeanie Byland’s journey with SOMO began around 40 years ago, and she has been an integral part of the organization’s growth and success ever since. Known for her tireless volunteerism, Jeanie has overseen the souvenir sales at State and Regional Competitions for over 20 years, served as a Unified Partner for 10 years, and participated on the board of directors for 16 years. She has traveled far and wide, supporting athletes at the World Games in Greece and the USA National Games.
“Jeanie has touched the lives of thousands of athletes, families, and volunteers,” said SOMO President & CEO Larry Linthacum. “Her dedication, kindness, and passion for SOMO embody the heart of our mission. It’s fitting that she will join her daughter, Sarah, [Hall of Fame 2018] as we celebrate their contributions as the first mother-daughter duo in our Hall of Fame.”
Jeanie’s volunteer work has also involved securing sponsorships and raising funds through partnerships with organizations such as Bass Pro and Mid America Mortgage. Beyond her fundraising efforts, Jeanie’s impact on SOMO athletes and their families has been personal and heartfelt. She’s a constant source of joy and support, always ready to offer a smile, encouragement, or helping hand, rain or shine.
Her influence extends beyond Missouri. Jeanie has served as a parent, fan, and Unified Partner in numerous USA National Games and international competitions, inspiring athletes and volunteers alike.
The Hall of Fame induction will take place during SOMO’s Annual Awards Luncheon on November 23, 2024, at the Special Olympics Missouri Training for Life Campus in Jefferson City, MO.
Jeanie joins longtime athlete Lucas Blattel, who was surprised with the news on September 10.
