Festus High School Recognized as National Banner Unified Champion School
On April 11th, SOMO (Special Olympics Missouri) proudly celebrated Festus High School’s outstanding commitment to inclusion with their second National Banner Celebration. This prestigious recognition highlights Festus High School’s dedication to meeting the 10 standards of inclusion continuously, year after year. To ensure sustainability, schools like Festus reapply for banner status every four years.
The celebration at Festus High School was nothing short of remarkable. Students came together for a lively pep assembly, showcasing their diverse range of unified activities. From inclusive games involving the whole school to participants from the intermediate school, the event tied back to Unified soccer, basketball, and track and field, emphasizing the spirit of unity and collaboration.
What sets Festus High School apart is their student-led approach to inclusive sports and clubs. Every aspect of their inclusive programs is driven by students, reflecting their intentional efforts to cultivate the next generation of leaders. Moreover, Festus goes above and beyond to foster a culture of inclusion by educating students from middle and elementary schools in their district, emphasizing that every individual belongs and brings value to the community.
Congratulations to Festus High School on this well-deserved accolade! The recognition as a National Banner Unified Champion School is a testament to their tireless efforts in promoting inclusion and belonging across all grade levels. As Jena Bohn, Special Education Instructor, aptly puts it, “Being chosen as a National Banner Unified Champion School is a true honor.” Festus High School’s programs not only teach, promote, and model inclusion but also inspire students to become leaders through inclusivity. It’s evident that their impact extends far beyond the walls of the school, shaping a more inclusive and compassionate community for all. Go Tigers!
