Celebrating Excellence: Special Olympics Missouri’s 2024 Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Banquet

JEFFERSON CITY – The Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) community came together on Saturday, November 23, 2024, to celebrate its 2024 Hall of Fame Class and honor the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families at the Annual Awards Banquet. Hosted at the Training for Life Campus, the afternoon was an inspiring reminder of SOMO’s mission to promote inclusion, excellence, and empowerment through sports.

Grace Davis, a SOMO staff member, and retired Sergeant Tony Lauth from the Rolla Police Department, emceed the evening with enthusiasm, highlighting the extraordinary stories of individuals who embody the spirit of Special Olympics.

Honoring the 2024 Hall of Fame Class

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees, Lucas Blattel and Jeanie Byland, exemplify the dedication and passion at the heart of SOMO. Both individuals have made a lasting impact, inspiring their communities and setting an example for others to follow.

Lucas Blattel, a devoted athlete with Cape Independent for over 22 years, has become a mentor, advocate, and leader within SOMO. From welcoming new athletes and ensuring their inclusion to representing his team’s interests in leadership meetings, Lucas has built a legacy of encouragement and community. His commitment extends beyond sports, with volunteer efforts at Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops, and other fundraisers. His accolades include representing Missouri at the 2011 World Games in Greece and serving as a Global Messenger. Lucas’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his remarkable contributions and unwavering dedication.

Jeanie Byland has devoted over 38 years to SOMO as a volunteer, Unified Partner, fundraiser, and advocate. Her efforts have enriched countless lives, from managing souvenirs at state competitions to fostering partnerships with businesses like Bass Pro Shops. Jeanie’s involvement in events like the Polar Plunge and Gary Brimer Sports Camp and her global advocacy, including participation in the World Games, highlight her passion for SOMO’s mission. Known for her positivity and warmth, Jeanie’s induction recognizes a lifetime of commitment to fostering joy and opportunity for athletes.

The Hall of Fame, established in 1997, honors athletes and volunteers whose contributions have significantly advanced SOMO’s mission. Inductees are selected through a rigorous voting process, ensuring the highest standards of excellence.

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductions, SOMO announced its annual award winners, celebrating individuals and families who exemplify the organization’s values. Winners were selected from area award recipients and recognized in four categories.
