Celebrating Dedication: 2024 John Michael Letz Award Winner
On December 6, 2024, the Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) community gathered at the Training for Life Campus to celebrate a year of incredible achievements, capped off by the presentation of the prestigious John Michael Letz Award. This year’s honor went to Sheriff Carrie Melte of the Linn County Sheriff’s Department, a true champion for Special Olympics athletes and an unwavering supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).
Sheriff Melte’s dedication to the LETR spans an impressive 19 years, during which she has played a vital role in organizing and participating in her local Torch Run events. Her involvement doesn’t stop at the finish line. Sheriff Melte has also been at the forefront of numerous fundraisers, working tirelessly to generate support for Special Olympics athletes in her community.
Carrie’s contributions extend to the global stage. She has proudly represented Missouri as a Final Leg runner for the USA Games, an honor reserved for the most committed LETR participants. As a regional coordinator on the LETR committee, she attends the International LETR Conference, where she gathers fresh ideas and innovative strategies to enhance the program’s reach and impact back home.
One of her most unique contributions has been the creation of the offender Polar Plunge, the first event of its kind in Missouri, which has grown steadily under her leadership. Sheriff Melte’s ability to innovate and inspire, even in a region characterized by large, sparsely populated counties, underscores her resourcefulness and determination.
Her quiet yet steadfast commitment has positively impacted two regions throughout her tenure, setting a gold standard for others to follow. Sheriff Melte’s unwavering dedication to SOMO athletes and the LETR mission exemplifies the spirit of the John Michael Letz Award.
