What is a Polar Plunge?

For decades, our athletes have been breaking records and inspiring others with their bravery. The Polar Plunge is your chance to show some bravery of your own.  Participants register as individuals or teams and create a fundraising page. This page can be emailed to family and friends to collect safe and secure donations. Then come out on Plunge day to take a quick dip in the frigid winter waters!

Paper registration forms are available upon request. Email us.

Did you know a group of polar bears is called a celebration?

How appropriate for the official party of winter! We are breaking the frigid waters of Stephens Lake just for you. It will be so much more fun with a group of friends!

We are all about good times.

The freezing temperatures might not sound attractive, but a huge event full of music, crazy costumes and loads of laughter can get anyone in the mood for a cool dip. To let you in on a little secret, you are only in the water for a few minutes, but you have a lifetime to brag about your bravery!

Too chicken to plunge?

We won't make fun of you. You can still participate by donating to a plunger by searching for them, or you may make a donation to the local plunge by clicking here.

Remind me why I'm doing this.

All the money raised at the 2012 Polar Plunge supports local Special Olympics athletes.  Sure, we’re all about year-round sports training and competition, that’s our mission.  But the words of parent Julie Bernhardt show our program offers even more: “As a mother, I want my kids to know it's okay to be who they are. I want them to know that everyone is different, everyone has challenges but that's a good thing. Special Olympics has helped me to instill that in them." That’s what you are doing - helping us use sports to foster inclusion and acceptance. Spend some time with our athletes to see it for yourself.

Can I get involved with Special Olympics?

YES!  Please don't let this be the only time we see you.  Our athletes would love the chance to thank you personally for all you've done to make training and competition possible for them.  Visit www.somo.org and check out our calendar to see a calendar of our upcoming events - we always need great volunteers and fans at our events, or you can contact us to help organize the events for our athletes.

The life of the party

The Polar Plunge is one of many events hosted by law enforcement to benefit their charity of choice, Special Olympics.  This year’s hosting agency is Columbia Police Department.
